New La Fonera+ now available July 10, 2007

Last week FON updated the La Fonera to the La Fonera+. It finally adds another LAN port ad thus you can now connect the La Fonera to your router and not loose a port. Here in the US you often get DSL modems with only one port and so far it was  impossible to use another cabled device (e.g. a VoIP adapter like my Grandstream 496 box). Now we are waiting for the next update which might feature a USB port.

Begging your pardon, but the added LAN port is not to save Foneros from “losing a port” as you stated in your blog post. The added LAN port is to solve a problem which has not been experienced by Foneros who have an upstream router to plug the La Fonera into in the first place. The added LAN port is so that non-wireless devices can still be connected to the modem at the same time as La Fonera. It is expected that the LAN port will also be bridged to the private WLAN, so now Foneros will also be able to access wired resources (printers, shared hard drives) when they are wireless. The original La Fonera blocks access for wireless computers from everything but the Internet and other wireless computers.
